III Cerulean Warbler Watch & Workshop

The III Cerulean Warbler Watch & Workshop organized by CWC-CR had unprecedented success!  The event took place on  August 27-28, 2011, at Las Brisas Nature Reserve and Maquengue Falls.
A total of 43 participants took part in the workshop on Cerulean Warbler natural history and the importance of correct habitat restoration, given by Ernesto M. Carman and Juan Diego Vargas.  The group included citizen scientists, local high school students, members of both the Costarican Ornithological Association and Union of Ornithologists of Costa Rica, a Partners in Flight representative and tour guides.
The morning of the 28th, this group was joined by another ten participants to engage in the official Cerulean Warbler Count.
After the official six hour count, 27 Cerulean Warblers had been spotted.  The number of individuals observed, and most importantly the amount of participants we had at this event, are the two main aspects that made it a grand success.

Now that we are well into September, the peak of Cerulean Warbler migration through Costa Rica has passed, but it is just the tip of the iceberg for the rest of neotropical migratory birds about to arrive.
Eastern and Western Wood-Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Black-and-white, Blackburnian and Canada Warblers and American Redstarts are well on the move.  The first large flocks of Common Nighthawks for this fall were seen on September 14, 2011 at several localities near La Alegría, Siquirres.
