Aegolius ridgwayi

The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl Project

The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is a poorly known species found in the highlands of southern Mexico and Central America and in Costa Rica it is found mostly above 2,800 m. Although the IUCN lists this species to be of Least Concern the Costa Rican government lists it as an endangered species and our data shows this small owl has a strong preference to using paramo and elfin forests which are two habitats at high risk due to rapid climate change.

Since 2014 we have contributed to the knowledge of this species’ diet, vocalizations, breeding ecology, habitat preference, longevity and molt strategy. We have also successfully implemented an artificial nestbox program.
