Roberto Vargas Masís holds Master's degrees in Ecology and Society, Natural Resources Management, and Tropical Biology from the University for Peace and the National University of Costa Rica. He currently leads Athene Consultores, works as a Soundscape Ecologist with Costaphonics, and serves as a researcher at the Research and Technological Innovation Lab at the Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED), Costa Rica.

His work focuses on bird and mammal bioacoustics, soundscape monitoring and analysis, automated detection and classification of wildlife sounds in Costa Rica. He has also led citizen science initiatives and provided biological consulting services for conservation efforts and research projects across the country.

He is the author of several peer-reviewed publications (see: https://bit.ly/publicaciones_robertovargas) in areas such as ornithology, ecology, bioacoustics, soundscapes, and automated acoustic detection, with a particular interest in ecosystem conservation and restoration.

Roberto currently serves as Vice Chair of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (Costa Rica Chapter), and is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the American Ornithological Society, the Raptor Research Foundation, and a founder member of the Asociación Ambiental Cerúlea.
